Is it illegal to have negative, accurate listings deleted from my credit report?
Creditors, collection agencies and credit bureaus will all try to tell you that it is illegal to get accurate negative information removed from your credit report. According to the FCRA, in most cases, accurate, verifiable, negative information must remain on your credit report no longer than seven years.
Note the words verifiable and no longer than. What most creditors, collection agencies and credit bureaus neglect to mention is that all information on your credit report must be verifiable, if not, then it must be removed; most of the time the above parties cannot adequately verify negative listings. No longer than means that creditors, collection agencies or credit bureaus can remove any negative listing they choose to within the seven year period; it doesn't have to stay on for seven years.
