How long does the negative information stay on my credit report?
Even though your creditor or the credit bureau can remove negative items whenever they choose, here are the rules set forth by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA):
- Most negative items must be taken off in no more than seven years.
- Bankruptcies can be reported up to ten years.
- Inquiries may remain on the credit report for up to two years
